| I have a long riparian forest on my land. It's being overrun by vines. Japanese Hops and Honeysuckle are the worst. Anything that tries to grow gets overwhelmed and pulled over. So I picked a few winners, in places where a healthy sapling sprouted in a good place. I'd go by every couple of weeks and cut away the vines. It worked great -- the trees shot up a foot per month.
Then the beavers came. Every one of my chosen saplings got chomped. This has happened for two years running. Now I suspect that the vines make a tree unattractive to beavers, so I have to strike some kind of balance. How can I get trees to grow between the two threats? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

| Crazy problem Joe. Maybe let the vines only clamber over the lower tree portions, the beaver zone, so to speak. Not the most elegant solution, but that's all I've got at the moment. +oM |

| I have this same problem, Joe. And, I haven't found vines, if left in place, to do much to deter the beavers. The only thing I've found that seems to work is a relatively heavy wire mesh. Anything from heavier, metal chicken wire to hardware cloth or welded-mesh wire works well. I usually make little cages, at least three foot high, for my trees, but another local nature park type area just very loosely wraps their small trees up to about a foot and a half or two foot (which seems to be working fine). |

| Tom, that's how I was thinking. It /might/ work.... Brandon, your logic is impeccable. I can't imagine that somebody who can cut down a tree with his teeth would let a couple-dozen vines stop him. But I saw no sign there was a beaver in the river until I made those saplings easy to get to. I have lots of trees. I'll try both. |
