came across a comment that stated red maples should not be planted in late fall. it is being shipped sometime in november. it will be a bare root tree. i really don't know that much about trees, but, am looking for any advice someone can give me that will at least give the tree a decent chance of survival. tia!

where is it being shipped from???

if the tree is fully dormant.. and that is usually the digging time..

and presuming your z4 is basically fully dormant .. by mid nov. ...

i really dont see a problem with it all ..

the key is: get it dormant.. keep it dormant .. though i have no particular info regarding a red maple as compared to any other tree ...

in case of early ground freeze ... i would prep the hole.. but refill it with loose soil ... and put some garbage bags of leaves over and around it.. until the tree comes ...

see link for proper planting ...

after planting.. i would mulch properly ...

drainage is very important, especially in regard to caly soil, if you have it ..... as you dont want to freeze the roots into an ice cube ....

but the tree.. after planting will PROBABLY not need further watering ... until late spring ...

good luck

Licious, how big a tree are you getting? I kid you not, if it's small, like seedling size, you could keep it in the refrigerator. Reason I bring this up is that at least where I live, red maple is one of a group of trees that indeed, as you heard, are better off planted in the spring.

Now if it's too big for the thing I mentioned, just plant it, water it in good, and hope for the best. I have seen them, and more especially Freeman maples-a cross between red and silver maple-survive a fall planting. Just not quite as sure a thing.

well, i placed an order for a flowering crab from the arbor day foundation in neb. trees will be shipped sometime in november.

the house i reside in does have a "root cellar" located in basement where i overwinter my canna bulbs. i am wondering if i couldn't keep the red maple dormant until spring down there? (that is, if it wouldn't be recommended that i plant it immediately)

if i remember correctly, trees are to be approx 3' tall?

Three ft. tall? Then I'd say you 'probably' could store it in the root cellar. What you want is coolness, darkness and just enough humidity to keep it from drying out. If you think your root cellar provides these conditions, it might work. One problem to watch for is the growth of mold on the plant. A teeny tiny bit wouldn't be so bad, but a lot would be.

BTW, you said you ordered a fl. crab, right? So is it the case then that Arbor Day Foundation is sending the red maple too? Kinda confusing.

yes. ordered the flowering crab. for doing so, they are sending a red maple and redbud trees for free. for the cost, figured it was worth a shot.

I try to be positive about most tree farms, but Arbor Day is pretty bad. Almost everything I got from them died, and many bare root plants were dead AND dessicated when they were shipped. It is a good idea to soak the roots in water for a while before planting - especially their stuff.
I am also zone 4, and I got a free red maple with a bunch of beech (LOL they sent me BLUE beech) trees I ordered about 3-4 years ago. I planted it up on my hill, and it is still alive, but it dies back every winter and is the same size as when I ordered it. I think their source is too sourtherly.
About the only positive thing I can say about Arbor Day is that their stuff is cheap, so it doesn't ding you too much to try, and to their credit, they did replace the (first batch) of dead trees.

What I don't get about this organization is why they ship at such odd times. They obviously support a great cause and all, but in so weird a manner.

I ordered a sour wood tree and hydrangea from Arbor Day and neither survived (they ship Spring and Fall, date depends on zone, these were planted in spring), they replaced the sour wood the following late Fall (actually around Christmas for SE Texas), it was warm last winter, potted the sour wood, it never did anything until late Spring, small bud at the base, which died in a week, finally threw it away a couple weeks ago. I like the idea of Arbor Day but man they send crappy product.
