It's hard to tell, but I'd go with it being just a variation of plain ol' Acer saccharum. The bark isn't dark enough and the leaves don't have the "droopy" quality of Acer nigrum.

A. nigrum, to my recollection is not native in DE (and your tree is probably native-grown vs being planted based on what you say).

However, A. nigrum *would* be more likely to be on a creekside location.
