Room For Ornamental Cherry Tree

Dear Everyone:

Please tell me if I have room for an ornamental cherry tree, perhaps Autumn or Yoshino or Snow Goose. I want to plant it in front and between my house and my neighbors. The space is 50 feet long but only 20 feet wide from my drive way to the property line. Of course I dont mind it overlapping my driveway as long as I can park a car, but I dont want it to go into my neighbors yard. I understand Autumn and Yoshino can grow up to 20 to 25 feet wide and Snow Goose up to 20 feet. Is there a room? Could I trim my neighbors side of the tree so that it wont cross the property line? Or should I pick another tree?

By the way, my member name Aiko is my Japanese mothers name. I appreciate your advice.

Eric

hi eric

welcome to GW ...

dont forget.. a tree has one trunk .. and a 20 foot wide tree.. only reaches about 10 to 12.5 feet [in your example.. each way from the trunk] ...

also understand that most size estimates are at 10 years ... and that most trees do not stop growing at some predetermined size ...

in fact.. i planted a mail order 3 foot stick about 12 years ago.. and its just about within the size estimate you note ...

the yoshino is borderline in my z5 ... an whether or not it actually blooms is heavily dependent on winter.. or late spring frost/freeze.. there may be an issue of micro climate or not.. in your z6 ...

finally.. dont worry about the neighbor.. until the time comes ... and at that time.. you go ask them if they like your tree .. or would prefer you butcher it at the property line ... most wont care ... but if they do.. come back here.. and we can guide you on proper pruning ... trust me.. it wont be a hair cut ...

finally.. again??? .... buy the right size tree ... bigger is not usually better .. i would look in the 3 to 4 foot range in height ... its younger.. transports and transplants easier .. and gets established faster ...

let us know if you need guidance on PROPER planting ...

Japanese cherries are often grafted on sweet cherry by growers in this country, with the result that you get surface roots that poke up through turf and paving. So planting one of these near a drive could become a headache. They are also prone to sometimes quite destructive pest and disease episodes, see what the situation is in your particular area before investing in a cherry.

Something like this might work out better.

Thanks Ken and bboy. I do like Adirondack. I also thought about Autumn Brilliance or Shadblow Serviceberry and Sourwood. What about them? Are they still too wide? Will their roots poke through, even through my concrete drive?

So, if I can plant a cherry, or the Service Berries or Sourwood, since I have 20 feet from the edge of my driveway to the property line, how close could I plant the trunk to my drive without harming the tree or the drive or the parked cars? If I can plant really close, can I shape any of them so that the branches will be high enough to park a car underneath? How close and how high? And will any of them still look decent afterwards? Can it be a safe canopy or a partial canopy over my drive?

Also, I understand they all need full sun, but do all the parts of the tree need to be exposed to full sun? The location where I want to plant does get almost full sun from about 10 am to 6 pm except the sides against my neighbor and my house.
