| Hello,
My parents recently learned one of their 125-year-old pin oak trees is in decline. I have done some research, with high hopes of finding a way to save this tree, however, the prospect of remediation is a long shot-as the tree will probably have to be removed. Would anyone know of any available grants, or nurseries, which may be willing to barter services, as a way of containing the cost of locating and planting a larger caliper tree, e.g. 8 to 9 inches, as a suitable replacement tree? The arborist who conducted the survey of my parents trees recommends a Swamp White Oak as a very good replacement tree. Sincerely,
Plainfield, NJ |

| In my experience all kinds of small/medium sized business owners will barter. Now ppl always wanna trade us handyman work for bedroom sets. Folks used to wanna trade whatever for auto mechanic work. To be on the up & up there is an IRS form you should use. Just figure anyone who would cheat our men and women in uniform out of tax money if they can get away with it would cheat you if they can get away with it. |

| I used to barter for three-figure stuff. 5 figures with lots of liability concerns? No way. Dan |

| Having written many grants involving urban forestry projects, I'll tell you that I've never seen one for transplanting large trees into PRIVATE property. The transplanting of such a large tree is not only hugely expensive, but pretty chancy. The larger the tree, the more difficult and tenuous the establishment process. You could plant a much smaller caliper tree and watch it grow by leaps and bounds, while the big one just sits and ponders whether it likes its new habitat or NOT. I'm sorry for the looming loss of this old tree. Tree death is a part of the grand scheme; it's the way it's supposed to be. There's an old proverb/adage with the message: Plant not a tree for yourself, but for the future. |
|
| rhizo: Its part of the grand scheme, unless the tree is in decline due to bacterial leaf scorch, which is infecting a lot of Pin Oaks in New Jersey these days. |
|
| Pin Oaks have a finite life span. One that is estimated to be about 125 years old is in a very natural state of decline. It's past the sitting-in-the-rocking-chair-on-the-front-porch stage...it's getting ready to go to 'Beulah Land'. Diseases and insects have probably already ravaged this tree and it is more than ready to give up its real estate to a much younger tree. |

| Regardless of cause of decline (I can go with BLS), a tree spade is a major operation with many liabilities and risks (including good chance at losing tree), and as such the barter better be good - something with a transferable title like a new super-duty 4-door pickup f'r instance. Dan |
