| We moved into our house earlier this year, and I'm pretty sure the big tree in our front yard is a Bur Oak. I am new to having a yard, so I want to make sure I'm keeping everything healthy. I have been watching the large acorns growing on this tree over the past few months, but this weekend I noticed some other growths. They look almost like a roasted head of garlic (see photo). I don't know whether to be worried about these, or if it is normal. I haven't found any pictures online of similar growths. My only thought is that it's some kind of gall, but again I haven't seen any like it. I did see a lot of wasps around the tree back in the heat of July and August when the leaves were sticky with sap. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

| Bullet gall - caused by the wasp, Discholcaspis quercusvirens. It only causes cosmetic damage - just ignore it. An oak without galls is like an oak without acorns. |
