I think this individual grows in Florida. What is it?

I don't think this is a fir or a spruce.

J and Dan, how can you tell that this is not?

Interesting...

Needles look like a Fir but I have no idea. The fruit don't actually look like cones.

If you don't get any hits, post in the conifers forum.

Might suggest Araucaria bidwillii. That's my first guess followed by A. angustifolia.

RE: Is this fir or spruce?

Cones aren't right for Araucaria. I'll send to the BH & see if she remembers - IIRC we had classes together near one.

What about pollen cones of Araucaria bidwillii? Or other Araucaria. Cunninghamia also crossed my mind....just briefly.

Wollemia nobilis

Forgot to add, those are pollen cones, after pollen shedding.

I knew if I tap-danced long enough...

That's the one: found in the wild recently IIRC.

Thank you everyone, especially Resin. I think GW tree forum is great! It gets things answered very fast!

RE: Is this fir or spruce?

I doubt it is in Florida. I know of none here that have survived more than a year or two due to extreme sensitivity to root rot. I have some grafted on Agathis now doing well though..

It's someplace where they can grow maidenhair trees, apparently.

You got permission to post this photo, of course.
