New Trees needed

Hello,

We are new home owners and sadly we had to take down 4 very large pine trees about 60' to the east of our house and on a raised ridge ~5' higher then our first floor next to the drive way. Our neighbor said he remembered them being planted 65 years ago and they just lived out there life now.

I have attached a picture from what I'm guessing is about 5 years earlier. Those small trees I think are Crimson Maples and the big pine trees next to the drive way are coming down right now.

We're hoping to plant some new trees to replace them. From reading around it sounds like April will be the right time to put some new trees in. We want to have something nice to look at and help block the wind. The other trees in the are are some sort of red maple tree.

We'd thought maybe using similar tress to the are so we keep a community looking going.

Right now were trying to figure out what the difference is between, Red, Crimson King, Celebration etc maples. We saw ad on Craigslist (https://buffalo.craigslist.org/grq/4672321636.html) and thinking about picking them up and planting them as soon as the stumps are gone.

Any of the Red kind of trees I think would look nice, but we'd also like to get something growing fairly quick to help cut the heating bills in the winter.

From reading around it sounds like April will be the right time to put some new trees in.

==>> well??? .. that would depend on where you are... of which.. you didnt mention ... see that NONE next to your name.. go to your members page ... by clicking your own name above.. and change that NONE.. to big city and zone ...

then give us some more info ...... such as soil type.. perk ...which is drainage ... and any other info we might need to know ...

as to the maples.. it mostly fall color.. google each name.. and flip to images ....

but i want to caution you .. against ANYTHING.. that claims to be fast growing ... you dont need shade so bad.. that you plant weak fast growing trees too close to your house ... BTW .. give us a pic of the house and the driveway ... a whole view ...

and finally.. i would not plant in the exact spot of the old trees... even if ground out .... how much room do you have there ... i am thinking.. with the utility pole... that might be the exact property line.. tell me i am wrong ... lol

Yeah, what Zone are you in? Is the soil acidic, clay, sand, loam? How big a tree do you plan on planting?

Right now is actually a great time to plant trees in my part of the country. (Unless you are planting bare root)

Personally I like sugar maple (where you can grow it) red maple, and Japanese Red Maple. (Although Sugar Maple are picky about where they grow and Japanese Red Maple are slow growing)

You say you want to lower the heating bills...are the trees to the North of you? I'd think you'd need evergreens for that...deciduous trees lose their leaves in the winter so they don't block much wind.

You'll have to be careful about what you plant that close to the road...is road salt an issue there?

Swb502, seems you got some planting to do.

Not sure where you are but I have recent experience planting near stumps and near ground out stumps. Believe it or not the ground out stumps give me more problems. By the time the wood shavings get mixed in with the soil you have a real odd consistency to deal with not to mention some sinkage and biological problems from all that rotting wood. Seems like six or seven feet away did fine for me with some big ground out ash stumps.
