| I'm planting some acorns - both Bur oak and Mexican live oak. I know, it's a long-term project but I've wanted these trees for years and with the water oak in my front yard gone (it was elderly and sick) I now have space for a replacement or two. So, approximately how long does it take for acorns to sprout? I expect it to take several months, at least. The acorns are fresh, just dropped from the trees. If older acorns would do better, I have some from a Bur oak that are last year's acorns - it's a different variety, though either would be fine.
Bur oaks do just fine here in Houston, which is zone 9. I looked them up and the info I found said zone 8, but these are mature, established trees here. |

| Bur oak is in the white oak group, so I would expect the acorns to germinate this fall. It could be quite soon. I don't know about the mexican live oak. I wouldn't have much hope for last year's acorns. I believe they are sensitive to drying out. Do a float test....if they float, they're no good. |

| Thanks, y'all. I was thinking a few months, but sooner is better. White oaks don't do well in my area, but the bur oaks sure do. Too bad they aren't better known here. I'll do the float test on some that came from the older oak in a bag of leaves I picked up for compost - I'll bet they're last year's acorns. |
