| We planted 3 green giant arbovitae, 5 schip laurel, 1 hoopsi blue spruce, and some dwarf holly bushes last year to create a natural fence due to a dog next door and our young children (long story). To keep the story short, we are reconsidering the decision and want a real vinyl fence along the property border for safety for the children. The question is without much spacing left between a fence and the trees, will this long term damage the trees if fence is placed only 1-2 feet from the arborvitae, schip, or spruce. The trees/etc are widely spaced from one another (had professional do it) and from the driveway - so they would have plenty of room on 3 sides but not the 4th --would likely be putting fence on the property border and they are close to it.
I'm willing to prune as needed. The arborvitae laurel & hoopsi are already about 6 feet tall each and survived first year well. Any advice? |

| I should clarify that the trees/bushes centers will still be about 6-8 feet from property line - it's really the edges as they stand now that are 1-2 feet from the line. |

| the hoopsi has too much potential .. growing 12 to 18 inches per year ... 8 to 10 laterally ... to be pruning it every year ... i would pay your pro to come back and move that one ... for sure ... or cut it down and use it as an very expensive xmas tree ... its basically the same with the green giants ... key word: GIANTS .... the laurel.. as a shrub.. can be maintenance pruned.. with little problem ... i am sure the vinyl fence is causing a great budget.. and i am sure you dont want it ruined .... but just consider the cost of having them moved.. as part of that budget .. you bought 4 to 5 foot specimens.. they werent cheap.. save them.. if you can .. and .. IMHO ... pruning them on one side for the next few decades.. is NOT going to work ... ken ps: of course.. you could prune them up above the fence.. when they get tall enough ... to allow for natural shape above.. hmmm.. i dont know about that ... are the GG single leader plants???? |

| I'd consider complete branch removal on the fence side only. I see no reason why this wouldn't work and it would be a one-time deal. Or at worst, once every few years as the branches on that fence side that remain grow larger and heavier and start to sag back down into the fence. Still not a big deal. And if I'm understanding you correctly, the trunks of these trees are 6-8 feet from property line/prospective fence location. If this is so, there will never be a conflict between the fence and these trees' trunks. +oM |

| Branches that are up overhead? I have no idea! What do neighbors everywhere else do in this ultra-common situation? A variety of things, of course, including nothing. Hardly a deal breaker. In any case, this has nothing to do with whether OP puts a fence there or not. The trees are already in place, 6-8 feet inside boundary. The remedy I suggest would result in fewer branches crossing the line. Fewer and higher up. ! +oM |

| Thanks for the responses. The neighbor has many plants including forsythia that cross our property line near these trees etc, so they really can't complain if future (years from now) a few branches cross theirs - also these are huge lots of about 1 acre each nowhere near their house. |
