| There is 1 particular mockernut hickory near my house that has outstanding fall color. I would like to collect the nuts at the appropriate time. There are 5 large nuts that appear as shown in the pics. Are they ready for collection or do I need to wait longer? This probably doesn't help any timing wise, but the shumard oak I was stalking in a park is now beginning to display mature acorns (I picked a few at lunch today).
I will post pics of the tree in fall color here later in the year. It was breathtaking last year, only beaten in beauty by 1 single sugar maple in town... IMO ;-) Thanks! John

| John, When they're ready(ripe) the husks will turn brown, split and the nut will drop out - or the whole thing, nut/husk and all, will drop. From your photo, it looks like the husk sutures are still tight, and the husk is still quite green. Wait a bit yet. |

| Cool, thanks lucky =) Maybe I could wait until 1 or 2 open then pick the rest off the branch? The lone limb within reach that has nuts hangs over an over grown grassy ditch. I am afraid if I wait until the nuts fall, I will not be able to locate them. Sound reasonable? And you were right, they are still green and very tight. John |
