Can a pagoda dogwood be grown as a single trunk tree?

I just registered for a pagoda dogwood in a city tree giveaway, to be picked up in a couple weeks. I want to plant it in the midst of my hosta garden, as the purple plum there died and I need a shade-producer for the hosta. Besides, the spot looks empty with the dead tree.

The site is overshaded by towering pin oaks, so that is why I selected the pagoda dogwood--it was the only understory tree on the giveaway list.

How can I make it more of a tree than a shrub?

Thanks for any info.
