Why did a squirrel come and eat my Dogwood's buds?

I decided I get off the couch and try to prune some of the broken branches off my d.wood tree. Since it had been a week since I had interacted with it. I inspected as usual everything was nice, the buds were huge and some had 3 buds setting on each tip. Then at the edge of one, I saw some holes in 4 dogwood buds, The buds weren't fully eaten off just holes in them, none other of the buds had gotten bitten, so why did the squirrels decide to eat just a few? Did they get bored with it? And I also noticed the impatiens and marigolds I planted were looking tattered as well, should I do anything to prevent anymore damage to any buds?

Apparently, according to this owner of a Dogwood, squirrels love this tree. Maybe there was only one squirrel and it wasn't that hungry at the moment.

You are going to have to protect your trees/vegetation. Be proactive. Good luck.

UHM...........I am sorry I am not familiar with any of your posts and you call yourself 'gardenapprentice' so I'll ask and hopen not to offend you. By buds were you by chance referring to the red objects hanging on dogwoods now? If so, these are the berries and it won't impact your bloom next year. They will, however, also eat buds.......so which got 'et'? LOL

i meant buds as in next years flower's. I know the berries are eaten up quickly by birds/squirrels but I've managed to get 3 berries and have gotten the seeds:P

You may have a young squirrel that is just doing as his mother said and try new things. If he tried it he may not come back.
