Would you be open to using a different purple leaf tree?

This particular plant (and "most" prunus/cherry) is host to a wide range of pests and diseases that dramatically shorten its life span and overall ornamental appeal.

A quick search shows that Select had darker and thicker foliage.

Depending on your zone, soil type, exposure, goal etc Grace Smoketree is a really nice plant. Typically multi-stem vs single stem.

Bad choice, unless you're a fan of black knot fungus (google it). Sorry to be harsh but there are way better choices if you're looking for purple foliage. I just removed the two canada red cherries I planted 8 years ago. Live and learn......complete pita and then finally decided a tree shouldn't be this much trouble and cut down/removed both of them this spring.

Totally agree with claynation_il .....sooner or later you will be cutting it down.....unlike other diseases that you could control/prevent, black knot has no cure other than pruning out the knots, which will make your tree odd looking......

and they mean.. short lived.. in tree years ...

ten years is about when you say to yourself... boy that is a nice specimen ...

and the following year.. all heck breaks lose ... lol ...

most of these types of trees... for me in MI ... were disposed of.. between 7 and 12 years ...

SELECT... means some nurseryman selected it for superior qualities ... but if you think of that.. selecting a superior plant within a family of inferior plants... even the select is still within the inferior group ...

be good to know where you are ... some in the prunus group are somewhat susceptible to winter damage ...
