Why the new leaf growth on birch tree?

I know this has been a very strange year, weather-wise. Has any one else noticed a similar situation with their trees?

Our Betula nigra Heritage 'Cully' was planted last October and has grown about a foot and a half. Over this past week we've noticed that the end of every branch has been sending out new leaf growth --- even as some of the older leaves on the tree are beginning to turn yellow and fall.

Any reasons for this puzzling event? Thanks,
Molie

Yeah, after hot weather lots of rain. Old leaves shed, the rain encourages new growth.

Strobiculate, thanks for the info. I'm relieved that this is "normal" behavior for our birch.

Ken, nope --- we haven't fertilized the tree and are just letting it settle into its new home for the next few years.
