Trees dying -- help!!

Posted by ghuber NJ (My Page) on

Hi all,

I have a lot of trees suddenly dying in my yard. On one side of my yard, I have 4 big trees (see pic) that are all turning brown. It started with the two middle trees and now seems to be spreading to the outside 2 trees. Any ideas? On the other sides of the yard I have arborvitae trees that has turned yellow. Some of the trees around it also look as if they are turning from green to yellow as well. Any ideas?

An arb can die, that's no big deal. And there are a surprising number of reasons. Pull, and when you do, pay attention to the roots and scarape the bark just above soil line. Color? Smell?

The junipers now...on the ones on the ends, stick a piece of white paper under the dead branvh and shake the branch. Look at the paper...anything move? Scrape bark, on a few different places. Color?

Now for the twenty questions...badically, provide as much info as you can as to weather and anything that has happened during the summer.

Any herbicide applications in your or your neighbor's yard(s)? Another of the twenty questions.

the lawn look rather weed free.. has your lawn been treated?? .. especially between the trees??? .. which are conifers BTW ...

and that insult could have been complicated by intense heat and drought this summer.. any history of such ...

the BROWN tree.. that is way beyond yellow.. is dead.. gotta go ...

and if you plan on replanting.. make a bed from the fence out a foot or two past the front edges.. to reduce the need for lawn maintenance.. including the weedwhip ... add a couple inches of mulch.. and water deeply but infrequently in high heat or extended drought ...

as to the top pic.. 3 are dead.. and i doubt the 4th will look very good by the time you remove all the dead stuff ...

brandon.. give them the planting guide should they plan on replacement ...

this is a prime example of lack of diversity in a given planting ... if you replace.. mix up the types.. so that next time.. if ever.. they dont all die at once ...

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your repies... Let me start by saying I took the advice of one of the people who replied and shook the branches in the 2 end trees. When I did, a few little bugs fell out. They were small, black, had wings and were jumping off the paper. Each time I shook, I found about 3-4 of these... Are these the source of my problem? I attached a pic though it's hard to see...

Hey ghub, the paper test which strob recommended is a test for mites. What you found are not mites and I also suspect they-the insects which fell onto the paper- are not responsible for the plants' demise. Something else is going on.

The weather we've had this summer has been one that would let mites get a good toe-hold, worth a shot. Easy test, low cost.

So...how about a.bark scraping? You want to see clear whitish color under the bsrk...actually, want to see bright green, but if that was the case you wouldn't be asking the question. I'm betting you are going to see streaked orangy colors.

So how has the weather been this year? Dry spells three weeks long punctuated by heavy downpours that saturate the soils for a couple of weeks?
