| I need them for a faire booth in November. I would love large acorns and caps and am willing to pay for a nice big box if anyone has a tree around. |

I have some. I believe the trees were farmed by the Indians because they wolf out and trees normally in a forest don't. Although I have seen a bur oak acorn much larger than mine. They said it was Texas bur oak but I don't know if that was really true. - jim |

| Jeff - I think you may have been the first person to mail these to me years ago as I recall the person mentioning a campus. I will gladly pay for anything you can send! A flat rate priority box is under $10 if you can do that. I can even pre-pay postage through PayPal - just let me know. And thank you! |

| Jeff sent me some Bur oak acorns last fall, they were golf ball size. Every one of them sprouted and are now about a foot tall. |

| That is exactly what I need. All we have here are annoying black walnuts that conk you in the head and fill up the pond. |

| Hi, I love oaks and acorns .. . wondering how you 'craft' them into something. Few years ago, picked up bunches and all I could do was drill holes in some of them and string for garland. Didn't have luck keeping the caps of them on, because of waxy or slippery coating that would pop cap off when I was drilling with teeny drill bit or nail. Tried to glue with glue gun, but too slippery. Glue wouldn't hold. Just curious, fall is my favorite season, and I love acorns and pine cones for another season! |

| I just found the Burr Oak trees at our local park & was fascinated with the weird (to me!) looking 'seeds' ... had no idea what they were til I 'Googled'oak trees as I knew the leaves appeared to be oak. The acorns are still green but am going to keep a look out for the ones that fall & try & get some to grow. They are HUGE! I also read that the Burr Oak is the state tree of Iowa- my birthplace. Glad I just happened on to this posting! |

| Just a thought to consider. Trees grown in the South, may not acclimate to northern growing locations. This topic came up with other tree species and failure to thrive when moved north. The thinking was tree grown from southern trees cuttings or seed, has developed the coping mechanisms needed for that climate. Trees grown in northern areas are more used to that weather and thrive in it better. Often do poorly when shipped south. This would be where the advice comes from "Find a local nursery to get your trees from, so you have a better survival rate." Trees grown locally, do better in local conditions. I know that there SEEMS to be no difference in trees, Burr Oaks for instance, when looking at them. Just that trees grown from southern acorns may not be as successful in maturing to full size. Would be easy to be wrong too, just that this "locale" of parent tree information has come up before in big failures-to-thrive discussions. Did seem most failures were imported bushes and trees, not local grown stuff. Good luck to any acorn growers with Jeff's acorns. Hope they grow swiftly for you! I have several seedling Burr Oaks coming along, that I started from the backyard tree a couple years ago. They are destined for fence row trees in the field or gifts. Rabbit nibblers are my worst enemy, not cold. The funny little hats on Burr Oak acorns caught my eye, like Russian fur hats. Mine are always the same size as other acorns, Pin, White, Red Oaks in the yard and woods. No acorns yet this year, but the Hickory nuts are falling. Very warm and lots of rain so trees don't quite think fall is here. Got colder last night, so maybe the best of summer is over. |

| According to what I have read the bigger acorns come from southern trees in Texas and Oklahoma. The further north you go, the smaller the acorns. |

| Not sure I was clear to some - I am not planning to plant these - just use them for crafts. I make miniature (think fairy and gnome) toys and these are nice for all sorts of things. As for the caps, I glue them on. E6000 works wonderfully but I have also used wood glue. |

| Hi Jeff: If the offer for acorns from Burr oaks is still open, I'm interested. As Heather says, postage for a large Priority Mail box is about $10. (Note: These boxes are available free at the post office). Pam |

i checked the trees this past weekend and they don't appear close to droping. the caps and nuts are still very green. if you need them by november, heather, you might want to go with those offered by jim. i will check again in a few weeks. the limbs are not low enough for me to collect them until they fall. |

Acorns

My art teacher has just asked the class to bring in acorns for a sculpture project. Problem is that acorns are very small right now. Does anyone know where I can get some regular-sized acorns? Doesn't matter what type of acorn. I live in the Los Angeles area. Thanks! |

| Unfortunately, you won't be finding any mature acorns of any size until at the earliest July or August(several species in the SW mature them at this time). Most won't mature until September and October even. |
