I'm fearing to much of a good thing!

Its been kinda dry here in Northeast Chattanooga. I decided since I had some time on my hands to water my trees. I have a dogwood, Bradford Pear, and Crape Myrtle. I watered them 2 times this week. Then a shower came and gave them a better watering. I was glad. But 30 minutes ago we got some of the reminats of Isaac. It was a heavy downpour. I saw on the dogwood some leaves turned a slight light green-yellow. We are expected to get 1-2 inches tonight through labor day. I'm worried about it now. If i calculate all the water+rain this week its been 5 inches and more to come! Hopefully since i have good drainage the water will just drain out quick and not hurt the trees.

No use worrying about it. BTW, trees are best watered no more frequently than about once per week, and heavily. But what's done is done. This wouldn't be the first time any member of these species' faced five inches of precip. +oM

When I was a kid, we had 7 inches of rain in 4 hours once. I don't think anything died from excess water.

Sure ya do...that Bradford Pear, for one thing. I hate those things a little more all the time. They are becoming more and more of an invasive problem around here. Bradfords are short-lived, weak-wooded, overplanted (even if you don't consider all their other negative factors), stink when in bloom, and environmentally damaging. And just when you had started to feel bored.... (-:

The thing about the bradford is i'm thinking of getting rid of it. Make it a compost heap. I got so many hornets "visit" it this spring. I'll replace it with either another dogwood or a redbud.

Don't "think" about getting rid of the pear, do it ASAP. It will only cause you grief later, and the worst thing about these trees is that they're a missed opportunity for something really great. Not to mention- some people in the know about gardening/landscaping will question your taste and knowledge for having one. Dogwood and redbud are good choices! See link. |

Well, the link vanished. Just look on this forum for the recent thread titled: "Help... ideas on how this happened and what type of tree is this?" It should be on the first page.

the worst thing about these trees is that they're a missed opportunity for something really great. ==>> man acer.. i gotta try to remember this comment.. spot on man .. woman .. whatever you are.. maple tree who has online capability??? you will have to kill the stump.. before you bury it in compost.. or you might end up with suckers ... stump killer or 100% roundup applied to the cambian of the cut ... or full removal ... ken

Thanks again guys. I have the stump and tree remover. I'm gonna remove it next week. Already made the order to get a western red-bud and a cherokee brave dogwood tree. BTW my dogwood tree has buds, some buds are even progressing so much i have some buds forming 2 other semi buds on the ends. However some buds aren't full size so should i worry about it? or will the buds still open up. But im noit worried about bradford suckers, if so i'll dig them up and give them to my ex-girlfriend lol

Thanks, Ken. ...and I'm a female tree enthusiast, but I'm thinking that most of the regulars here are men. Maybe I should have a poll, for curiousity's sake. |
