White oak tree in Cleveland

I am in Cleveland, OH and I would like to try my hand at growing a white oak tree from an acorn.
My problem is that I don't know where I can find these acorns.

Does anyone know where I could find a white oak tree in Cleveland (specifically near Case Western University).

If there are any picnic areas near you, there should be lots of them. In SW Pa they are everywhere. If you can't find one someone on here (even me) can send you some. There's a bunch of them about a quarter mile from me. As long as I can find one tree with a few ripe ones before the critters get them. Unless you spot a tree. They are so prolific here, I would imagine they are where you are. Let me know.

Try Lakeview cemetary just up the hill on Mayfield - they have many different specimens all nicely identified. Maybe you'll get lucky and find some acorns on the ground.

Yes, I am a student, and yes it will be a pot project.

I'm trying to keep the budget as low as possible, but I'm fine spending some.

I know that I need to have a lot of time for cold stratification, so I figure I should try getting started now in case i decide to continue. I've been interested in growing a white oak for about a year now, but last year I missed my chance to get acorns.

I'll check out Lakeview cemetery and the parks around the area. Maybe I will get lucky.

(Thanks for your quick help by the way!)

TJ,
White Oak acorns will sprout in the fall. They don't need to be cold stratified, and in fact can not be stored for very long at all.

Oops, I must have gotten my information mixed up.

Thanks for correcting me!

Well I went by lakeview cemetery and I did find some white oaks (I believe). I found a couple immature acorns, and I'll try to plant them. I'll try again at the end of the month to see if I can get more.

Has anyone had any experience growing one before? I plan to start in a Styrofoam cup; is that alright? Also, it takes around 50 years to start producing acorns, correct?

Would you consider white oak acorns from SC? Send me an e-mail if you want some. If any others want some, we might have to do the SASE, because the last time I offered some free seeds and cuttings I was overwhelmed with requests! It got pretty expensive!

Ooo thanks, maybe. It's just getting into the season for them, so I'll probably get an opportunity to find some. I want to also try making acorn flour/pancakes. Sounds like fun!

(My other projects are trying to grow a lychee tree and a kumquat tree. So far I have 2 lychee sprouts, but when I went to the store to try to get a kumquat, they were out... Growing an oak also sounds fun!)

White oaks produce acrons fairly early. I planted three here 10 years ago as 5 foot trees, and they are all producing.

White oak acorns are loved by critters. If mine fall off the tree, they are all eaten in a day or two. If they are on the tree and have turned brown in their cup, they are ripe and ready--you can pick them off the tree then. They drop very soon after turning brown, and then are gone!

If anyone is curious, I found a white oak tree in Lakeview Cemetary, and I found a viable acorn. I planted it about a month ago, and its sprouting! It's already getting its first leaves :)

I haven't tried in years, but back when I was a kid, the easiest way to find viable acorns from White Oak was just to look for ones that were already trying to sprout in mid-late fall. A tree with a good crop would have a lot on the ground, and you could sift through them and look for any which had a root poking through. Then I'd just pot those ones up and wait. It usually worked, assuming the squirrels didn't get to them.

RE: Sprouting?

Hehe, just noticed your recent post... doh!

I'm not sure its good for it to already have leaves... unless you are gonna keep it inside all winter (which also might not turn out great, but at this point you are pretty much forced into it).

Haha, yeah unfortunately I have to keep it inside all the time, but it seems to still be alright.

A month or so ago its leaves dried up and fell off, but new ones have grown in (and are more numerous). I don't know how long it will live, but it seems alright now (a year later).

It lost its leaves because it's genetically programmed to go dormant in fall, and probably regrew them because it was warm.

Short term it should be fine, but eventually you'll want to let it have a real winter dormancy and real sunlight outdoors.
