Magnolia stellata looks poorly

This tree was planted in May, which is late for this area, but it looked fine until the end of August, when the leaves started to burn.

Drainage in this area is very sharp, but it's been watered regularly and seems to be staying damp-to-moist.

Do you suppose the leaf burn is due to the tree not being established, or is this something Magnolia stellata does? I am not familiar with this species and it is not common in this region. Full sun, soil is silty loam.

Thanks!
