Dying Trees

Hi all! I am a new homeowner and I really want to get into gardening. I thought I would start with doing something about the dying trees on the side of my yard because they look awful! They get plenty of water. My neighbor, an avid gardener, told me he didn't think they were planted correctly. What should I do? Dig them up? Cut off the dead parts? There are six of these trees. Two are more than 50% dead and the others less so. Thank you!

I tried to post more than one picture but can't figure it out.

Hi RB. It may be that at least that plant in the pics is a gonner, in so poor a condition as to make it not worth working any longer with. But in the short term, you may as well prune off all the dead stuff and see what you've got left. Make clean cuts with sharp tools, always cut back to a live branch or branchlet, leaving no stubs, and don't bother with putting anything on the cuts.

Then step back and see if it's something you can live with while you wait for the plant to respond with new growth. I can't quite tell from the pics whether or not I would in this case, but what do you have to lose?

Maybe one shot showing us the whole plant would help.

Thank you for the advice! I will try to take a better picture after the sun goes down.

Here is a better picture of one of the trees.

RE: Dying Trees

These are Leyland cypress and the disease looks like Seiridium canker. Cut them down and start over with a better plant..Alternative could be Cryptomeria japonica 'Yoshino', Thuja x 'Green Giant', Juniperus virginiana etc.

Thanks for the info! Possibly stupid question- Do I need to pull up the root system or just cut it at the base of the tree?

most likely that would depend on whether you insist on putting the replacement in the same place ... as in it has a function besides its own beauty ... like blocking a view ...

I second Salicaceae's diagnosis (and replacement species suggestions); its Seridium canker disease.

Here is a link that might be helpful for this problem on Leyland cypress.
