Planted BS about 5' high last winter. They did well until about 2 months ago. Both put out new growth in spring, kept watered, mulched, both are in part shade throughout the day. One has 90% drop, the other 10% drop. Needles on the worst one are still green the, ones that are left. What can I do to keep these from dying? Has been hot here in upstate SC this summer but average rain and watered when not raining. Any help appreciated, Crosskey.

Hmmm...that's some pretty rapid development of whatever is happening. Doesn't sound like gross water mismanagement. Seems too soon and too young of trees for rhyzosphaera needlecast. Gonna have to ponder this one a bit. In the meantime, is there a DNR forest health newsletter or something akin that you can study to see if there are any such issues going on generally in your state? +oM

| they are conifers.. but also trees ... you can learn all lot about conifers in the conifer forum.. though i care not where you post. ... i think of SC as both the south.. and the mountains.. i didnt think Picea pungens did well in the hot south .. where are you ...\ using the latin name.. check out the link ... but w/o a pic.. we can not tell you if it was personal abuse.. or a disease.. you claim they were watered.. but tell us how.. trees need deep watering.. and then near drying in perfect drainage ... not spraying the needles often.. explain how you water.. how you planted them.. and your soil type.. and maybe we cant get somewhere ... and for a bit more money.. you can buy spectacular NAMED VARIETIES ... the fact that you are talking about a GREEN BLUE spruce.. tells me you can do a lot better.. presuming it is proper for your area.. and you are interested in starting over ... if we decide such ... pic of mine below.. started as a $25.. one foot.. one gallon in the season listed at the bottom ... this is Picea pungens 'Hoopsi' we need a picture of yours to get much further.. but frankly.. with 90% needle loss.. get rid of it ... and i am leaning toward improper watering.. or infected stock to begin with ... also.. please detail this summer weather.. as in drought/heat wave ... ken

I gotta go with Ken on this one......not sure Picea pungens a good tree for the South. Dislikes summer humidity and would prefer a much colder winter. For much the same reasons, blue spruce do not do well in the PNW either - not hot enough in summer, not cold enough in winter and more rain than they are happy with. They survive for awhile - dwarfs better than the full size trees for some reason - but typically succumb to various fungal and insect issues over time. It is tricky to find a healthy and decent looking mature blue spruce in my area.

Rained most of summer, watered when not raining. Raised perimeter and filled with hose a few times a week. Temp over 100 for a few weeks here in upstate SC. Soil is mostly clay and fine gravel with some loamy soil. No fertilizer. Planted February last year, did great and put on new growth in spring, no needle loss until few months ago, thanks Louis.

I think there's a blight they get back there.

Thanks for the information. Looks like I needed to do more homework before planting. Although the surviving tree was beautiful in the spring when the new growth came out. Can't believe came to this. Thanks again Louis. p.s. really enjoy this site.
