Spraying Insect Control on Trees in Fall

I used a product called "Bayer 3 in 1 insect disease & mite control" this summer because I had some problems with insects. I was going to spray them one more time but the leaves are just starting to turn colors. Is it ok to spray this product on my trees in Fall (September)? The trees I have are Fallgold Ash Trees.

wont all the bugs be dying with the first frost??? .. in a few weeks???

and.. w/o an ID of an actual pest.. then use of any pesticide is nothing else but pollution ...

you spray.. with a proper ID.. with a proper chemical/organic.. at the proper time.. and i cant think of fall as being the proper time.. UNLESS the label indicates such ...

save your money.. time.. and mother earth.. and put it all away until you SEE ANOTHER PEST worthy of such nuclear warfare

What sort of insect problems did you have?

I'm not sure which insect it is. This summer I noticed the leaves started falling off some of my trees. I picked a few leaves off and there was some bugs eating the leaves. I was told my a few people to get some bayer tree spray and spray the trees. After spraying them, it seemed to stop the tree leaves from coming off. Here is a photo of the worst tree... http://i53.tinypic.com/rmr21l.jpg

If it was a foliage problem, I agree with the others - no need to spray now. The trees have pretty much stored enough carbohydrate for next year and the rest of the foliage could be eaten and they won't be much worse for the wear. No need to pump a bunch of chems out now, most insects are about done with their life cycle. Next season, take pix when you first notice any damage and post it here - then the group can advise you better.
As to your picture - if you can scratch the bark on the bare branches with your fingernail and you see green color under the bark, they should leaf back out next year.

and that is improper staking ...

Thanks everyone! This forum is great. I am glade I found it.

Ken, the staking was there when I moved it. Can you point me in the right direction on how to do the staking correctly?

If the staking was done incorrectly, I am wondering if they also planted the trees incorrectly.

My BH's program has diagrams and all you need to know about trees, including planting diagrams.

All true about the ID first. ID first and treat if necessary with the right product at the right time.
One exception; if you are constantly plagued with Mite, Mealybug, Scale and some other pests a fall Horticultural Oil is a good way to reduce insect populations for the following year. Along with good sanitation and other cultural controls, Fall and or Spring Oil treatments can substantially reduce some pest problems thus reducing the over all amount of pesticides used.

cant really see the staking in the pic provided..

but riddle me this batman .... why do you think it needs staking...

a large transplant .... should ONLY need staking for a year.. until its own roots can grab hold and hold it there ... and if it cant grab hold in one year.. it was improperly planted ...

otherwise.. as dylan said.. 'the answer my friend.. is blowin in the wind' .... and trees should do so ...

and while you are at it getting us a new pic .... lets see if its telephone poled into the ground.. me is suspecting improper planting ... can you see the root flare at the surface of the soil????

do get this in your head .. that a vigorously growing healthy tree .. has all kinds of insects .. all over it .. and RARELY are they problematic [see bible re: plagues] ... and that spraying the bugs.. is not going to make an otherwise unhealthy tree better ... very often.. bugs attack otherwise unhealthy trees ...

my gut is telling me... this tree has a multitude of problems associated with the prior owners planting ... [not you for sure.. lol] ... and the bugs are the least of your problem ...

more pix please

Too true Ken. The visible problems (insects, disease) on of most landscape plants are not usually the cause but the symptoms of sick trees. I just looked at the picture. We need to see more, like how it was planted. Looks like a very neglected tree close to the road and all. If as I suspect this tree has irreversible human damage then it may be better and cheaper to properly plant and care for a new tree.
Any way I was just talking in general about oil.

Ken, this is a newly planted tree. I bought the house in May and I think it was planted in April.

I will take some more photos tomorrow and upload them so you can see how it was planted and I will take a close up of the leaves.

===>>> i bet a shiny penny .... this will be the decision ...

jason.. as you did not plant the tree .. short of you digging it up.. we will never know what is going on underground ... and that is where we usually find reasons for whole branches dying .... after a transplant ...

if it was yanked out of a small pot.. and its roots not unwound ... its terminal ...

if it was ball and burlap ... we will never know if 99% of the roots were improperly dug out ...

lets see those pix... and see what we have..

but as the man said... it might end up easy to start over.. with you in charge ...
