What's wrong with my ficus tree?

Posted by coreymbest Florida (My Page) on

Hi!
I've had this ficus tree for 31 years and in the last few months it started growing vines off of the branches. It's never done this before. They hang about eight inches off of each branch. They're also growing up it's trunk. I have no idea what it is, if it's sick, or a normal thing (although I doubt it since it's never happened before). Any insight would be appreciated!

arent they roots???

i dont care where you post.. but this is a houseplant for most of us.. i bet you will get some great info in that forum..

if not here ...

dont vines grow up from the ground...?? ... in other words.. a vine cant spring out of a tree or a houseplant.. or its not called a vine .. hence.. lets try 'advantageous roots' ... who knows.. lol

It's a fig tree, you're in Fl.--they are aerial roots. Normal, no problem. Many Ficus do this.

Hi, Ken:0) Lets try 'adventitious roots' ... who knows ...?

That is a skinny trunk for a 31 year old tree though. I agree with the answer given, but how is that trunk so small on a 31 year old ficus outdoors in Florida? It must be different from the ficus I've seen in Fla that are monsters, that take over yards and sidewalk areas.

Probably Ficus benjamina, greenlarry. Common houseplant in our climate.
