Pretty sure its not a maple. Elm perhaps?

oh. I dont know much about identifying different plants or trees, but am trying to learn. I was under the impression that only maple trees had the helicopter seeds?

Manitoba maple, box elder, acer negundo.

Yes, box elder. You only showed part of the leaf, it has compound leaves....reminiscent of poison ivy.

Some might argue, but one of the worst Acer species in my opinion.

Boisea trivittata magnet
Brittle
Usually poor fall color
Disease prone
Poor habit

The only redeeming feature is that is can grow on terribly dry poor soils.

You forgot the 5 million seeds each tree produces every fall, whaas ;)

Thanks everyone for the help in identifying the tree.

The other day i was looking for the perfect sunny spot in my yard to put a veggie garden. Looking around, the perfect spot would be in the spot where this tree is shading.

I saw the helicopters on it and knew it was some sort of maple, but wasnt sure if it was one that i would want to get a few of the helicopters off of it and get a few other maples growing before i cut this one down.

knowing now that it is a box elder and isnt a very useful tree, ill be cutting it down and will plant two other types of maples elsewhere in the yard.

Again, thanks everyone for the help in identifying it.

OP (Oppie-hah!), I'm just impressed that you-a self-described tree newbie- had the presence of mind to think maple. That's pretty good. But no, the tree ain't pretty good, unless you're somewhere where nothing else better will grow. Then it's the greatest thing!

Around these parts, box elders come up like the weeds they are-everywhere. True, true, a native species, but a junky one.
