Today I found a small wild American beech about thirty feet from where I hoped to plant either a white or northern red oak. On the other side of the beech (about 15 feet) is a very nice wild dogwood that I'll never cut. Beech is my favorite tree and I'd sure like to keep it. There's a nearby road and field that my husband insists on keeping open, so these trees wouldn't have much else around them. Any thoughts?

That would be fine in the woods so I think the trees will be healthy enough.

American Beech are very shade tolerant, oaks are but not as much as Beech. Most likely the oak will grow a little quicker so 30" should be ample space between plantings.

Beech trees are just asbout as shade toletant as any tree. Maybe, in some areas, an eastern hemlock would outrank it by a bit for shade tolerance. So, you can plant a beech tree right under an oak tree. It will grow more slowly in the shade--maybe 6 or 8" per year in the shade of the average oak tree. If you want it to grow faster, plant it in the open, and 30 feet from a white oak should be just fine. --spruce
