Yellowood Tree dropping leaves

Hi all,

A couple of years ago I felt really lucky to run across a Yellowood tree sapling at a native plant sale. It was about 6" tall when I bought it, and is pushing 3' feet now.

Beautiful little tree in foilage, but for the past two years it seems that the leaves turn brown and drop early. They're already all gone and it's nothing but a stick.

Michael Dirr speaks of beautiful yellow fall color on this tree. Is this early leaf drop just because it's young? I'm in Z7A Middle Tennessee.

We had a vicious drought this year, but I was carefully watering my new trees. All seem to be fine.

If it's just youth I'll hang with it a while longer. But it is occupying a very prime piece of real estate in the front yard, so I'd love to know what you think!

Mine was planted as a 10" seedling last spring. Its about 5' tall and still very green.

Mine is growing in a very well drained sandy soil and gets about 5-6 hours of sun.

One nursery that carries them in SE WI grows them in clay and they drop early and have dull fall color.

I'm waiting to see what mine does for color this year.

That's interesting - thanks for your reply. No clay - it is pretty good soil out there, but not sandy. I wonder if it's doing better in your climate. Although with a name like Cladastris Kentuckea, you wouldn't think Tennessee would be a problem for it. Hmm. Hope you get some pretty color! I hope I do too, next year?

Mine is getting more sun than yours - it's pretty full sun in that location.

I'll snap a pic tomorrow. I rarely see them around as we're out of its native range.

Could it be getting too much water by chance? I heard they are a bit finiky with water.

Maybe give it another year to see what it does. Otherwise you just might have a "weak" seedling.

OK, I'll look for your pic tomorrow! Thanks!

I can't imagine it was too much water. But if they are finicky, maybe it was not just the amount that it wanted. :) I think you're right, one more year to really let it get its legs. I do really want fall color in that spot eventually, so I guess if it does this again next fall I might have to think about something else for there.

Is this early leaf drop just because it's young?

==>>> i would suggest that you can not compare young trees with adult characteristics .. i think you hit the nail on the head..

and throw in a hard summer ... that surely does not help no matter how much TLC you applied ...

As of today its still growing a bit so I hope it hardens off soon. Starting to get some yellow.

Thanks for the photo! Yours looks quite a bit taller than mine. I can see that it is starting to get just a tinge of yellow. :)

I just bought Dirr's Encyclopedia of Trees and Shrubs a few weeks ago, and in it is the most beautiful photo of Yellowood fall foilage. Ahhh!
