2013 Autumn Ember Days

Are you familiar with the Ember Days? These are traditional days in the church calendar set aside for fasting. This year the Autumn Ember Days are:
September 18
September 20
September 21
(note September 19 is the night of the new moon)
What does this have to do with the Tree Forum?
Removal of noxious weed growth has been a concern of mankind ever since the beginnings of agriculture. Think of those medieval hedgerows and roadsides, how to keep out the briars & vines without the use of herbicides?
By cutting the stem on one of the ember days the plant is "robbed" of an entire season's worth of growth before going dormant. Also, there's not enough time left to resprout and put on growth before frost.
Today we can combine this knowledge with the use of herbicides to ensure the weeds are killed. Here is a recommended way to kill Tree of Heaven, White Mulberry, Autumn Olive, Callery Pear and many others:
For small weeds spray all of the foliage with herbicide while temp is above 60 degrees F. For large trees such as TOH use cut stem application. To do this cut away bark at the base, paint with full strength herbicide such as glyphosate and allow it to be drawn down to the roots. It won't happen overnight but eventually the whole colony will be killed.
