TN, some of the maples (smaller ones), my dogwood, and other few trees around my neighborhood are earlier than normal with fall colors, anyone else seeing this?

Stress from the summer heat and drought started quite a few trees around here a month ago. Seems more moderate temperatures and rain have slowed the leaf drop.

All over. Cottonwoods, Ash, Birch, Red maple are the most obvious.

Yep. My 14 ft Ginkgo biloba 'Princeton Senty' has been yellow for about a month. Now some of the leaves are gone and others are falling. There are a few inner leaves that are a light green/yellow and holding on. It's been a terrible year!

same here ...

water deeply.. and far into october ... consistent with your soil type ... though with cool/cold nights.. you should not need all that much water ... insert finger or small trowel and find out if the soil is dry ...

even though trees lose their leaves above ground... they can still be active below ground.. fall is root growing time ... as long as soil temps remain high enough ... [it really doesnt have anything to do with air temps.. except how such changes soil temps at depth]
