right now.. they look like the leaves on about half my trees... ready to fall off ...

and you cant really treat them.. just before they fall off... well.. you can.. but it would be a waste ....

Yup-typical late-season look to those leaves. If there really is some process at work, we're going to need lots more info, and as Ken has indicated, some early-season pics.

Lindens are susceptible to the linden borer, and like all boring insects, these can spell real trouble for the tree(s). Classic look for that is a dead or dying top. Does your tree have a dead or dying top?

The other thing that can present in exactly the same fashion is root death, whether due to rotting or any other factor. Dead roots = dying top portions. So it has ever been.

That little bit of blight on your leaves.....in late summer/fall...is in and of itself of no consequence.
