| I have found that this is an acorn tree that gets only about the size of a good size plum tree.It is multi branched just like a plum tree and will produce acorns at a young age.I think you could plant this like an orchard style thicket for deer with room in between rows to promote growth.I have never seen one of these trees. Looking for fast makeing crops(anyone have knowledge on the dwarf chinkapin oak-I think it may be also called dwarf chestnut oak).....thanks |

| Haven't planted the species myself, but have seen it growing wild in parts of MI. Oikos grows it and claims it produces acorns at an early age. It's supposed to be very good for deer and other wildlife - see link. |

Had one, from OIKOS, at one time, but I think it died from lack of care while growing in a pot for a year before transplanting to a permanent site. Currently have a seedling of Q.prinoidesXvirginiana growing here - assuming a multistemmed shrub form, but no acorns yet. |

| Just off hand I believe this tree grows in north Missouri and into Nebraska. I don't know how it would do out of its natural area. |

| I see that I am just below the range that is shown. Two differant Tree growers has told me that a lot of people in my area has been having luck with it.I would like to hear from someone first hand. You never know if they are just telling you that to make a sell.I have been useing one of the growers for a lot af years and he has never lead me wrong yet.I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE THAT HAS HAD GROWING EXPERIENCE. |

| Where do you live? I'm in N.TX. the only Q. prinoides I've seen is growing at the OSU ag. center in Oklahoma City. It is a small multi-trunked tree with Chinkapin type leaves. If your in the midwest I don't see why it would not grow for you. I'm pretty sure I've seen Q. prinoides growing on shale in N.E. Oklahoma too. I would like to try one myself. |

| CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI. I saw on a different tree growers website today that it grows in zone 3 to 9.That makes three sources that said it grows in my area, but would still like to hear from first hand experience. |

| A friend from Iowa (near Dubuque) zone 5a was picking acorns these past few weeks. It grows very well in our super-hot & humid, summers. That's all I can really add to this discussion. I'm going to grow it for hopeful attraction to wild turkeys. Dax |

| I have them growing very well from several different sources. One main source for southern growers is Advantage Forestry. The NE State Arboretum sells the acorns as well, Oikos and True Nature Farms sell the seedlings and dwarf chinkapins from all those sources are doing well in 5b. There are some people in TX that are growing them even in this drought. |

| I have two dwarf chinkapin oaks, along with two bear oaks (similar growth habit from what I've read), on order from Reeseville Ridge Nursery out of Wisconsin, so they should be hardy into z4b or so. They look like great small trees to plant in the mixed shrubs row I've got going along my property line. |

Thanks everyone! I ended up getting some from Advantage Forestry last spring, so I will see how they turn out after winter in the spring green up! |

gardenall, The guys at The Wildlife Group, back home in east AL have a wide selection of hard & soft mast-producing plants, including dwarf chinkapin oak, that sound like they'd be right up your alley, and adapted to your climate. |
