i am not much concerned with leaf issues in fall ... as the leaves are shutting down for winter .. and will be falling off ... i presume its triggered by shorter days.. and cooling soil temps ...

need some history of the tree.. potted??? ..media.. fert and watering protocol ...

i am not big.. on worrying about minor leaf problems .. even on this pic.. it looks like 90% of the leaf is green and able to function ... so why spray???

and i am going to guess.. its potted ... and if so.. the stressors are probably related to that.. and the solution to the stressors.. makes the problem go away... if it is potted.. is there some way to get it into mother earth.. this fall or early next spring ..????

Hi Ken. Thanks for your reply. The tree is not potted. It grew from either a Hickory nut or the root stock of a previous tree. It sprouted in summer of 2012. It's now over 7 feet tall. I have not done anything special for fertilizer...just lawn fertilizers that get applied, both organic and synthetic with Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Iron, Calcium, and Magnesium.

The leaves have been like this for several months. Some are getting worse. Same deal last year.

Probably pecan scab - a fungal disease affecting leaves, nuts, and occasionally young shoots.
Economically important in commercial pecan production, but rarely an issue on hickories, other than the aesthetics. Some species more affected than others - shellbark hickory tends to be fairly resistant, as a species, but others, like shagbark and mockernut may be significantly affected in years when conditions are good for scab infection.
