Water Fairy

Have never done this before but am wondering if it would be wise to give a good slow drenching to the street trees in front of my house - a basswood and elm - before winter comes. I have personally treated the elm for the dreaded emerald ash borer, trying to keep it at bay. This year, the tree looked great from the house, but I noticed a couple of weeks ago that branches on the street side were already bare at the top. Having lived a busy life at this house for 27 years with 5 kids, I marvel now at the size these trees have attained since we moved in. I would like to help them continue to grow and survive.

If this would be good to do, when would be the best, optimal time to do it?

Thanks!
