What kind of hickory is this?

Posted by river_city 7A (My Page) on

The younger bark on my hickory doesn't match that of any identification sites that I've been using as reference.

Could someone else help with this?

A leaflet close up and if possible a nut would help! Some of the pros might get it without that, though.

I'll go with carya glabra

As requested. Thanks a TON for helping!

Some more info: it's growing next to a runoff, which empties into a reservoir about a mile away. I'm in Richmond, VA.

It's driving me nuts - it really doesn't completely match anything I can find.

Given the images, it's difficult to ID. The terminal leaf is perhaps too big to be bitternut, but the nuts are too small to be shagbark.

Pignut maybe.

Looks like pignut, C.glabra, to me, too.

So then it must have been driving you pig-nuts, rather than just nuts.
