The Lansdowne Sycamore (pics)

I stop to take a look at this tree about once a year and finally took a few photos. I had an apartment a few blocks away about 15 years ago, and it might have been the first tree I really looked at with amazement. My inspiration for becoming a tree nut.

The garbage can provides some perspective, but this is a massive tree. Enjoy.

I'm normally not really impressed by big trees because my lot in filled with oaks and huge redwoods, but that tree is fabulous! I would love to see it in person.

Some of the largest sycamore specimens I have seen (in pictures) completely lack a central leader like the one shown however nearly every youthful sycamore I have seen has a strong tendency to develop (or redevelop) a central leader until the trees are 30-40' tall. I have seen several examples locally of trees much larger than 40' and most have multiple leaders. This leaves me very confused...

Awesome tree, thanks for sharing

John

Jeez. That trunk girth is something.

Thanks,

There are many champion trees in Eastern Pa, I would love to go out that way. Alot of the Champion oaks are out that way too.

Poaky, if you ever do head out this way, check out the William Penn Oak in London Grove, PA. It's a few miles away from a nursery I frequent, and it's always worth a stop.

If I get out that way I'll try to see it. There are 2 Champions near me, 1 red oak in Perryopolis Pa and 1 red or white oak near Footdale, Pa both about 8 miles approx from me but they are among other trees and without a GPS I can't find them. I am probably a stones throw from them but can't pick them out among the other trees. I may bug my friend with a fancy phone if they have GPS on them. Lots of people think it's nuts to go look at trees, especially to drive a good distance away. Well, lots of people do it in the fall, but I mean the tree collectively. I'll try and fit it in a trip to Virginia beach or New Jersey, maybe next spring.
