Help please, Japanese Maple has a split

Hello. I have a seven year old Japanese Maple that I just love. I planted it at my old home and I dug it up and brought it with us four years ago.

We had that terrible freeze last April and I lost a lot of branches on it, but the rest of the tree recovered nicely and it looks good now, except I noticed this "cut" on it recently. We don't really have any arborists around here. Even the ones who advertise as such are usually just tree trimmers. I don't know who to ask about this so I'm hoping someone here can help.

I am posting a picture of it. It's in shade, so I had to throw the flash at it to get a pic. It almost looks like I took a shovel to it, but nothing could have come in contact with it where it is planted. (it's in a raised bed with a fence around it).

I was wondering if I could put anything on the "wound" or whatever this is and wrap it maybe? It's right where the graft is and I'm afraid if I leave it as is for the winter it will continue to split and I'll lose my beloved tree.
