Can't make out what this is but its some kind of large shrub

It might be Escallonia. Not my climate though. It would help if you mention where the photo is being taken, or edit your profile to show what part of the country you live in.

I think it is a Michelia, a magnolia relative, native to China. There are a couple of species, shrubs or trees mostly, heights ranging from 10 to 90', depending on the species. They all seem to be relatively tender - Southern Living GB recommends only two, M. figo or banana shrub and M. maudiae (too new for a common name), for the lower south (an arc running roughly from Virginia Beach to El Paso) and the rest are recommended for south of that, coastal and tropical south.

Yes I know what it is. It is a young M figo.
