What do you suggest to keep 20 year old green ash's safe from EAB

I was suggested to use Bayer tree&shrub defense but the thought of dumping 5-10 5g buckets of the stuff per tree is daunting not to mention $$$ im sure. Any other suggestions that will work>? If thats about it then thats what ill do as the health of the trees is the most important consideration IMO.

Thank you!

Imidacloprid, the active ingredient in the Bayer product and other brands, is the most widely recommended preventative for EAB. You would not be using 5 to 10 gallons of it per tree, however. It's somewhat dependent on the concentration, but typically you would use 1/2 ounce per gallon for each inch of tree circumference at chest height. If the circumference were 4 feet - a very sizable tree - you'd use 24 ounces of the active ingredient.

pay up..

or cut it down.. and put it out of your misery ...

there is no other choice.. IF you are in an active EAB area ..

are you???

i presume a 20 year old tree is huge.. and he meant 5 to 10 buckets of properly diluted product ... not undiluted product ...

call you county extension office or your state forestry department.. and insure that you are at risk ... z6 simply doesnt tell us much of anything where you are ...

mine grew like weeds .. from 3 foot whips to 25 foot trees inside of 5 to 7 years.. i treated once.. and then cut them all down while i could still do that with my own saw ... as you note.. i was not willing to pay the cost ... EVERY YEAR FOR ETERNITY ...

one thing for sure.. perhaps you ought to consider planting some replacement trees now.. so that when you do get tired of paying thru the nose.. you will have well established trees.. ready to take over ...

Bsmith, have you calculated the yearly cost yet? I used to know it but have thinned my heard of ash trees considerably.

EAB sucks.and I'm not sure I can blame it on Romney or Obama. Maybe GW lol.
