Does buartnut produce juglone like black walnut?

Posted by nick_b79 z4 MN (My Page) on

I'm looking for a substitute for black walnut that doesn't produce juglone, since this tree would be planted near my vegetable garden. I was looking at buartnut (a butternut/heartnut hybrid), but am unsure if it produces juglone or not. Does anyone know for sure? Also, any other comments about buartnuts in general for nut production? Do they require two for cross-pollination? Thanks!

Only very small amounts, much less than Black Walnut.

Excellent. Thank you.

Butternut is succeptable to butternut canker or Sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum and its population was greatly thinned by such a disease in Ohio years back. I would suggest a Carpathian walnut. An added benefit of Juglans regia is that you don't have to remove the outer fruit to get to the nut as the fruit opens up, exposing the walnut which you then just pluck from the husk.

Here is a link that might be useful: Butternut Canker Info

Are buartnuts susceptible to butternut canker? I thought the genetics from the heartnut parentage would confer resistance, which is why I discounted pure butternut right off the bat. Otherwise, does anyone know if pure heartnut would be fully resistant and hardy in zone 4b, MN (30 miles south of St. Paul)?

I'd like to grow Carpathian walnuts here, but the master gardeners at the MN Landscape Arboretum I've spoken with have told me that this species has done poorly in their plantings around the U of MN so far.

Japanese walnut(J.ailantifolia) and its sport, the heartnut(J.a. var cordiformis) are pretty much resistant to the butternut canker. Hybrids of butternut with heartnut or Japanese walnut vary in their susceptibility to infection/disease - some quite resistant, others susceptible.
There are several 'butternut' cultivars that have been propagated for decades, that appear to be resistant - and with the advent of DNA analysis, have subsequently been shown to be hybrids with Japanese walnut or heartnut.
