Can all Magnolia species be crossed with one another?

Or does each Magnolia species have it's own smaller specific species group which it can only hybridise with?

Some can for sure. That is how we got the hybrid ladies "Ann", "Jane", etc. I'm sure others can be more informative than I, though.

and from the magnolia wiki page:

"Hybridisation has been immensely successful in combining the best aspects of different species to give plants which flower at an earlier age than the species themselves, as well as having more impressive flowers. One of the most popular garden magnolias, saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana), is a hybrid of Magnolia liliiflora and Magnolia denudata."

RE: Magnolia hybridization question

Thanks, I was mainly wondering if all the different "Section" magnolias can be crossed with one another.

Like shown on that wikipedia link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnolia#Selected_species

I read about at least one hybrid that was in a different section (one was evergreen and one was deciduous) and it was successful in crossing. So I guess most or all Magnolia species can be crossed.

Thinking Lireodendron tulipeferea x soulangeana. Now that would be something!!!

The article linked below is a little out of date, but it will provide lots of info related to your question.
