| i would suggest ignoring the tap root issue in its entirety .... in my world .. if it were determinative.. then we would have no tree nursery trade .... as no tree larger than a foot tall.. would ever be able to be dug up and moved ... there are many other variables that are much more important than that one.. like media mix.. drainage and sunshine ... what are you growing ... ken |

| I live in a community in a forest, and some of us are working to promote better appreciation of the forest--promoting utilization of windfalls, not chipping everything that has to come down, fighting aliens, and most of all right now, finding something we can make a little cash from to promote our goals. We thought if we offered acorn seedlings at a fair next fall, we could stimulate a little interest. Admittedly a gimmick. I have a lot of sprouted acorns from a prominent white oak right now which I thought I'd use for this. Thanks, Ken, for your thoughts. Coing |

| i would use mother earth.. its the fail safe ... presuming it has some good drainage .... just turn some soil.. and plant on one foot square ... and cover with hardware cloth.. to keep the vermin away .... i have what is called mineral sand ... and if i dont have 100 sprouted acorns each spring .. i will eat my hat ... and most do it.. right where they fall ... as soon as they sprout and extend to about 6 inches... lift and pot in a high drainage media ... and place in the shade until fall party ... it would be better if this was a two year plan .... as the trees would be a bit older.. so plant twice what you need .... so you will have more for the following fair ... now.. fighting aliens .. as in extraterrestrial??? .... ken

| As dricha said, removing the pot bottoms and then placing the pots over a wide mesh will air prune the tap roots. They will stop growing downwards when they reach air and send out side roots. Milk cartons, quart yogurt containers, deep nursery pots with the bottoms removed all work. You want containers deeper than wide preferably. |

| Cool pictures. Are those Pinyons? |
|
| Yep |
|
| Which ones? I've only grown Pinus remota. I got lucky one year when they made a good crop. Time of year around Labor day. First part of Sept. |
|
| These are edulis. Before I read your post, I didn't know about remota, so I went and did some research. Wow, so many pinyons! Thanks! |
