We planted a stewartia 2 years ago. It bloomed the first year but not one flower this year. The tree looks healthy. Any ideas about the lack of flowering?

in my z5 MI .. we had a bizarre week of mid to high 70's in MARCH!!! ... just a couple months early ... and then a return to normal winter temps for a month.. and a really darn cold late april.. with repeated deep freezes .. as a result ... a lot of the spring flowering trees.. simply did not bloom.. since their buds were 'set' the prior fall.. and simply died ... on 20 lilac bushes.. i had NO FLOWER ... what was your spring weather??? i do not know when your plant sets buds.. but i am thinking the lack of flowers was weather related .. there is always next year ... ken ps: and no.. fertilizing will not help .. lol ..

Camellias, which are in the same family are often a source of bafflement because they come from the nursery in small sizes covered in flowers and then do not bloom again for some years afterward, when they have grown bigger. It would seem the diligent fertilization program at the production nursery versus the casual or absent one in the final planting site would have to be the difference. If your specimen is as green and vigorous as it was when you bought it then all you can do is wait. If there is a possibility that it is not then you would want to fertilize it and try to improve its condition. If it is stunted it will not flower in the same manner as if it had a full head of steam up.

Mine bloomed the three previous years but not this year, mainly due to what Ken said. Very warm in March, much freezing in April. And being in the ground just two years, bboy is correct in saying to just wait. tj

Thanks so much for the feed back. I bet you are correct about the weather. As I said it looks healthy. Hopefully we will see blooms next year.

Yeah, mine didn't bloom either. It made me sad. Marie
