 o
Cedar age

Need an educated estimate of the age of a cedar tree. Piedmont North Carolina, I am sure this is an Eastern Red Cedar, Juniperus virginiana. I have logged many of these trees, but this is one I want to preserve.
The diameter is about 30" at about 36" high . This was an old tree when we bought the property in 1953. The tree is directly under an electrical power line that was built about 1935 and the tree has been regularly topped since that time which no doubt stunted it's growth.
Your estimate of it's age?

Its impossible to know just by the diameter or height. You need to get it cored by a dendrologist if you are seriously interested in its age. The oldest ones have measured out at 300 years.

What greenthumbzdude said, except I'd add that a dendrologist familiar with your area might be able to give you a very good guess with just a quick look.

Probably in the 200-300 year old range but as mentioned above impossible to tell without coring it. If you could find the stump of another tree of similar size and in similar site, count the rings on it and you would have a pretty good guestimate as to the age of your tree.
Check your state's big tree registry to see if it might qualify.
