Forecasted Record Low Tonight

Any record lows coming up this weekend? Honestly I don't give two hoots about frosts this time of year but a hard freeze this early in October is beyond frustrating given the year so far.

At least 70% of my deciduous plants aren't showing any color yet so odds are this blast of 24 degrees tonight is going to ruin my fall.

The last time I had a mid 20 low, it zapped most deciduous plants. That was at about 75% peak later in October.

Wonder what effect this early freeze is going to have on the trees that haven't begun their color change. New territory yet again for me with gardening. Sure may others have dealt with this in the past and its probably nothing, just that we don't get to enjoy. the color change.

2012 has to be one, if not the worst weather years. Record late freezes (due to March heatwave), sustained record heat, sustained record drought and now record early freezes. Icing on the cake...this is the year I installed most of my landscape at the new house.

I'm going to ask my wife to dispose of all our temp. gauges, rain gauges and block all weathers and news sites/telecasts on the TV and web. I'm going old school so I don't have to worry anymore.

LOL Whaas! That last sentence really hit home with me =) The last two years down here have been damn near inhospitable to plant life. I've lost 80% of the red oaks in my woods and the same rate for ash trees. The local hillsides have large dead trees all over. Really depressing and will only get worse as the stressed but alive trees succumb to disease in the future. Fall color is about 5% here but no forecast freezes yet, just mid-upper 30's. Arktrees looks like he is gonna hit freezing (and most likely lower) the next two nights.

Good luck to ya! Fall is my favorite tree viewing season and it really sucks when it is cut so short as yours might be.

I feel ya Whaas. Watched nice line of showers develop just to our east, over Lower Michigan, and then on through NY, etc. We can't buy a shower. I don't know if it's ever going to rain/snow here again at this rate. And like you say, now unusually early cold. I'd guess that means we'll be in the 80s in a week or two-still with no moisture.

35 this morning for a low and now it sleeting outside and in the lower 40's. The forecast for me is 31F tonight. Assuming that happens, then we will likely see 25-28 accounting for my cold spot. Should be enough to kill the Bermuda law for the winter. Decided not to mow, because of the forecast, and then just whack it as low to the ground as possible. Really, rather it get no lower than about 30. Cold enough to send the trees to color, but not enough to kill the leaves outright. Would be a short color season, but better than no color at all.

By every compassion for your developing drought. Droughts suck!!!!

Well, still using air today as it's rather humid but expecting a 20 degree drop tomorrow and holding in the 50's with rain. Not expecting lows below low 40s at night but that will be chillier than 'normal'. Off shotemplates temps are still around 70 f so it really can't drop that much but then again, last year we had a bizarre, Halloween snowstorm that should not have occurred then a warm and dry winter. Local weather weird for a few years now.

Hope you all get to enjoy some fall color. Locally I was able to enjoy stellar but brief coloring. We are about 90% right now. But my yard is about 20% if that.

I got 30 and 31 for lows in mid-Sept which didn't do much as it was only for a couple hours.

I was hoping the forecast would improve for tonight but its supposed to dip below freezing @ 1am and continue to drop to 24...26 @ 7am, still 30 @ 8am. An 8 hour freeze will surely kill off the leaves on most plants. My Ginkgo are SOOO green right now!

50 day precipitation is 0.7". Haven't seen any decent, yet well below normal, rain since late July and early Aug. In fact mid August is the only 1" or greater rainfall I had since...wait for this one...November 9th 2011. A disgrace.

That is 11 months with only one 1" rainfall.
