i would get some PROPER MEDIA ... pot them up ..

and leave the pots outdoors for the requisite time ...

and then bring the pot in.. in say January or so???? .. if that is the proper time ... others.. or your research .... will tell you the period length.. IF ANY ...

trees are not easy to grown indoors.. but you say you are doing it for fun.. so go for it ....

but they might not like houseplant potting media.. as it will hold a lot more water than a tree might prefer .... so either use better stuff.. or to save money.. just dont water them too often .... tend towards dry ..

Either follow Ken's lead, or put them in the fridge now.
If you keep those acorns dry, at room temperature, until November, they may no longer be viable.

I gathered some acorns from a young Schuettes oak earlier this week; they're now in the fridge in a ziploc bag with some damp (not WET!) peat.

White oak acorns germinate in the fall so those need to be planted in beds, pots, or final planted area NOW

The red oak acorns, once mature, can be collected and stratified immediately after the float/sink test is performed.

soooo ... the real experiment..

is to put 3 in a pot... and do it that way ..

3 in the fridge..

just try each suggested way ...

presuming you dont get an ID.. cover your bases ...

As Jean said.......white oaks do not need stratified. Plant them as soon as the acorns mature. Biggest obstacle to success is keeping rodents out of your stash. I have found they prefer protection against freezing after germination, which occurs rapidly. I keep my seedlings overwintered in a cold frame held just above freezing.

Wow Ken, now that is scary! We are thinking along the same line.

I currently have 12 in pots outside and the other 14 in the fridge in a zip-loc bag and I am giong to get another set to put in the fridge with damp media!

That just gave me cold chills!

I am also going to get some pictures of the trees so maybe someone can give me any ideas on species. I am pretty sure it had round edged leaves.

A good leaf picture and an intact acorn picture with cap should be sufficient for identification, I'd think. I'd also take a pic of a branch with any buds.
