I am having a 3.5 gal 5 ft forrest pansy redbud planted in my front yard this weekend. It is a special tree as it was given to me in memory of my husband. I want to do everything I can to keep it alive and well. I am in Missour zone 6. It is in a sunny location. How often and how much should I water? Do I continuue to water through the winter? Any other tips for this particular tree appreciated!

RE: Forrest Pansy Redbud- Water Needs and Care

Redbuds don't like soggy soil. Lightly moist soil is about right. The ideal thing to do is to physically check the soil moisture before watering. You can do this by digging your fingers into the soil, or, you can also use a long skinny screwdriver to probe the soil - light resistance means the soil is moist, heavy resistance means the soil is on the drier side. You need to train yourself for your type of soil since soils like heavy clay inherently have more resistance than say, a good loam.
Having said that, the cooler it gets the longer it takes for soil to dry out. This time of year you might check it once a week, and in winter once every two or three weeks if precipitation hasn't occurred. You can stretch that out even further if the tree is well mulched.
