holes in my prairiefire crabapple????

This spring my 2 1/2 year old prairiefire crab started showing some vertical cracks about 1/2" or less up most of the trunk and across some of the lower branches. Was thought that it was because of the stress of changing rain and drought conditions. However, just yesterday noticed three concentric rings of shallow holes [spaced equally ~1/4" apart and ~1" above and below each ring] around the trunk just below where the branches have formed. Last weekend my husband trimmed off a branch just above where these rings are located. What am I dealing with?? It is a beautiful tree, so would hate to think it is now infested with something that will kill it.

My first thought when I read about the vertical cracks was that perhaps you had frost cracking on your tree. Crabapples have thin bark and should be wrapped from Thanksgiving to Easter during the first several years to prevent the freeze/thaw cycles that cause cracking. Once a tree is stressed, insects like to move in.
