Buck rub I presume? Is that damage all the way around? Might not technically be a 'goner' but this sure didn't do it any good. But trees have amazing recuperative abilities. Thing is, once a buck takes a fancy to a certain tree, they often come back to that same one. +oM

I have a sweet gum that is about the same size. The tree seems to be growing well and produces very colorful leaves in the fall. I have had it about a year so don't now when the damage was done. But at some time in the past (deer?) removed the bark from about half of the diameter of the tree on one side, from the ground to first limbs about 3 feet. The tree is about 6' tall. It is not in any current project area, and is in a place in the yard so that it will be years before it causes any problem. Also as best as I can determine it is over or quite near the main water line to the house. The plan is to leave it, until there is an alternative reason for removing it. Though I know at some future time it will need to be removed.

Yep, the damage is pretty much all around the tree circumference The tree is a scarlet oak

noo.. the tree is a FORMER red oak.. which is now a dead stick.. above the rub ... cut it off just below the damage... and you might be surprised what it can do.. with an established root mass ... i wouldnt give up on it.. but i wouldnt look at it very long ... ken

Ken, the tree had just been transplanted. Should I prune it underneath the wound?

The wounding looks bad, and I might be full of hooey, but what have ye to lose by just letting it be until next spring? Plants do surprising things and if by chance, there is NOT as much damage to cambium and associated tissues as appears to be the case, it could yet recover. Not saying it will....I'm saying it might. +oM

i agree with tom... you have nothing to lose with leaving it.. all others things being done proper.. like planting.. watering.. etc.. and a properly fresh plant [compared to one tortured on an asphalt parking lot all summer] ... i guess all i was thinking.. was ... as noted.. the buck will probably keep coming back ... and he might force it out of the ground.. and if cut.. it might escape his lunacy ... i surely wouldnt go pull it out.. may as well see what happens ... have you lost your bambi/disney like affection for the cloven hoofed rats with white tail yet??? ken
|
Ken, you made my day. :-) Yes, I did immediately lose my fascination for the hooved rats. In any case, I have put a protection around it (yes, I could have thought about it earlier right?) and we'll see how it does next spring. But now the priority is to protect the two quercus albas at the edge of the property (and those can't be protected with tube since they have two/three leaders from the very base, which - call it sacrilege - I am going to keep)...

I have a very old apple tree with crisp delicious winter keeper fruit. As you can see the ripe apples have a "seam". Does anyone know what type of apple this is? The tree is over 50 years old and trying to die. We pruned all the dead branches off but I'm afraid it's not gonna last much longer and I would like to plant another just like it.
