how about something naitve? Flowering Dogwood, Eastern Redbud, American smoketree, Sourwood, Sassafras, Blackhaw Viburnum, Serviceberry, American hawthorn.

Not sure what prospers in your area, but paperbark or trident maple perhaps? A golden raintree might push the size a big eventually. Wonder how a Japanese or Korean stewartia would do in your area?

stewartia pseudocamellia, i agree with richard. gorgeous bark and great scarlet fall colors. can be multi-stemmed too. great selection but i have had trouble getting one where i live in vermont.
