Red Oak disease?

Posted by trilliank TX (My Page) on

I have had this red oak since May and most of the leaves have fallen off. This is a picture of a new leaf that sprouted recently and it has black spots? The leaves that have fallen start with black spots then get brown on the edges then fall off. Any help on what this is?

RE: Red Oak disease?

You've had quite a bit of rain there, no? Looks like perhaps some version of "anthracnose", a catch-all term for a host of fungal foliar diseases which can affect oaks. But like Ken says, it is fall! Let them fall.

The pathogens responsible for this group of maladies can sometimes survive the winter in leaf litter and such. Some recommendations say to rake up and remove those leaves. But I prefer to simply mulch them up with the mower......thus adding badly needed organic matter while simultaneously causing any pathogenic inoculum that might be present to itself be destroyed by the far stronger beneficial soil fungi that decompose organic matter.

And, in any case, anthracnose-like diseases, while annoying, are rarely serious threats to the host plant(s).

The exception being dogwood anthracnose. Yes, that just looks like an oak that's been sitting in the rain too long. The tree is probably fine. Many of our trees are losing leaves fast this year. We got heavy rain yesterday, knocking down a lot of leaves, and it's supposed to be windy today. It is 34 this morning - There's a freeze watch in effect Sunday night.
